In the third quarter of 2017 we undertook a national employee confidence survey. The aim of this particular research was to monitor four key indicators of employee confidence: job market optimism, salary expectations, job security and business outlook optimism. 292 employees drawn from over 19 economic sectors responded to this Q3, 2017 survey. We have been doing these surveys since August 2009.
  • Employee Confidence Index is 34 percent compared to 37 percent in the second quarter of 2017.
  • In the last six months, the most negative thing that participants experienced in their organisations is salary delays. 38.1 percent of the participants raised this as the most negative things that they experienced, compared to 32.6 percent in the second quarter.
  • 57.2 percent of the participants believe they will get a similar or better job in the next six months if they lose their jobs now as compared to 48.5 percent of the second quarter.
  • A majority of the participants (84.3 percent) are not confident that they will get a cost of living adjustment this year, looking at their organisation’s current circumstances and outlook for the next months compared to the 84.6 percent for the second quarter.
  • A large proportion of the participants (66.8 percent) are not concerned that they could be retrenched in the next six months compared to 70.6 percent in the previous quarter.
  • 63.4 percent of the participants do not expect things to be better in the next six months compared to 55.5 percent in the second quarter.
  • In the next six months, 79.2 percent of the participants do not expect the economy to improve compared with 77.9 percent in the second quarter.
  • 57.1 percent of the participants believe that the leadership in their organisations are capable of changing the fortunes for the better compared to 61.0 percent in the second quarter 2017.
  • Hiring new employees was the second most positive thing (35.8 percent) that happened in the past six months in the participants’ organisation compared to 31.3 percent in the second quarter.
  • Statistical analysis showed that there is a relationship between job category and confidence of finding a new job in the next six months. Most of the Managerial participants (53.6 percent) are confident that if they were to lose their jobs right now they would get a similar or better job in the next six months. A large proportion (62.1 percent) of the Non-Managerial employees are confident that if they were to lose their jobs right now they would get a similar or better job in the next six months.
  • The data reviewed that there is a significant association between job category and the participants’ confidence in leadership’s ability to change the fortune of their organisations for the better. Most of the managerial participants (65.2 percent) believe their current leadership is able to change their companies’ fortune and most of the non-managerial participants (53.8 percent) believe that their current leadership is not able to change fortune of their organisations.
  • The results show that, there is a significant association between gender and the participants’ confidence in leadership’s ability to change the fortune of their organisations for the better. Most of the female participants (54.2 percent) believe their current leadership is not able to change their companies’ fortune and most of the male participants (62.4 percent) believe leadership will change fortune of their organisations.
